Romanticism

is a period in art that i will talk about. I used to take a class in art.
So i will gather all my information and write it here.
Hope i will give you as much information as i remember, and entertain you with my art knowledge.
At the end, it will be lovely if your thinking of liking art changes to understanding art.
That will be awesome :D

Anyhow, Romanticism, when?
It is a movement originating in Europe in the late 1700s and characterized by a heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual's expression of emotion and imagination, departure from the attitudes and forms of classicism, and rebellion against established social rules and conventions.

Cool no?

Caspar David Friedrich / Cloister Cemetry in the Snow / 1817-19Time, decay, natural force we cannot control, nature is a supernatural
The Sublime became a theme in art during the period of romanticism in the 18th and 19th centuries. In particular the works of Casper David Friedrich to name the most common example.
The sublime has to do with this shift from humanism (the idea of the human being the center of the universe) to the the Sublime where humans were nothing in comparison to nature and God's creation which can overcome anything man has achieved. It's this idea becoming exalted at the realization of
all mans fate (tragic consciousness) in the presence of something greater than man. Its a personal spiritual experience. This idea of individualism in art comes about due to the rising Revolutions (French and America) and spread the idea of civil liberties and human rights for all men.

The Sublime

A theory and/or attitude toward beauty, nature and spirituality marked by a combination of awe/pleasure and terror/fear inspired by nature’s beauty. Shipwrecks / shows the power of nature
Sunsets / wild wave movement / turbulent sea Wild nature / mountains, etc…

Schopenhauer

For him, the feeling of the beautiful is pleasure in simply seeing a benign object. The feeling of the sublime, however, is pleasure in seeing an overpowering or vast malignant object of great magnitude, one that could destroy the observer.
Feeling of Beauty – Light is reflected off a flower. (Pleasure from a
mere perception of an object that cannot hurt observer).
Weakest Feeling of Sublime – Light reflected off stones. (Pleasure from beholding objects that pose no threat, yet themselves are devoid of life).
Weaker Feeling of Sublime – Endless desert with no movement. (Pleasure from seeing objects that could not sustain the life of the observer).
Sublime – Turbulent Nature. (Pleasure from perceiving objects that threaten to hurt or destroy observer).
Full Feeling of Sublime – Overpowering turbulent Nature. (Pleasure from beholding very violent, destructive objects).
Fullest Feeling of Sublime – Immensity of Universe's extent or duration. (Pleasure from knowledge of observer's nothingness and oneness with Nature).
