I was Asked by a mechanical engineering friend, What is Graphic Design?
I simply told him it is Graphic Design.
and elaborated more,
Wherever you look you see Graphic design, billboard, cars, pcb, font, street, newspaper, even in nature !!
he was shocked
i smiled and continued,
Graphic design isn't like many describes it as art. It is totally different.
In art you can give your opinion if this look great, beautiful or no!
in Design you can't, it either works or not!
So, it is the science to send a message through a visual. This is my definition of Graphic Design.
In magazines, you will see a beautiful model which is art (photography) and around her types and images.
The page it self is design, where the designer combined several objects together, in a way to focus on 1 element and send a clear message.

And this is the grid that i build on the cover, where we see the hierarchy or information ( MAKE UP is what we see first) , the focus point (the model eyes) and the other information.
So in a very short way
Graphic Design is the science of sending a message through visual.
