A question is circling around my mind,
Is university necessary to learn Graphic Design?
Is university necessary to learn Graphic Design?
First, what is university, why it is important?
University is very important, it teach the student about life, it prepare him to the market. It provide him with basic knowledge about his career.
Honestly, form my surroundings, i know a lot who didn't learn anything from instructors, they developed their knowledge from self-learning.
The important thing about going to university is to earn a degree and have this paper that will opens opportunities for you :P because many companies recruit upon degrees/ grads ...Plus if you want to join a syndicate you must be a university graduate, some require test/ or experience.
So, to me you need the basics, and the paper (degree), it is necessary to go to university but do not estimate that when you graduate you will be an expert because you won't !
You need to do a self learning, watch tutorials, surround yourself with designers, be motivated to do researches, and so on.You need to be unique than others, if a lot of your friends are experts in logo design, try to be a digital artist/ animator/ web designer,,,
Education never stops, if you want to be a better person/ a better designer,
I graduated from university in 2012 with a big know how in animation. Through my masters i developed this strength and i did the following:
Then, i began to dig more inn logo design, branding, understand how we do that?
why this logo is better than this? how we do branding? how we build that on a grid? how to made a brand stand out n a market? And yes, i should know all that from my bachelor degree but because of my instructor i am not. She didn't had the passion to teach neither about branding. So through my masters i was capable of producing the following:
Then i was introduced to service design/ app design/ web design. I was always in a stage of learning, i have a curiosity to learn always something new. Like so i feel confident more and powerful.
Today, I am a web designer too :)
Conclusion
A good designer is always in a learning mode! you need to do a lot of research, always up to date so you can face others easily in the market. Be creative, special, unique by following other designers, blogs, youtube channels...
