AluEco: How Roto plays a part in sustainability and material recycling

Two materials we use extensively in the manufacture of Roto hardware systems are steel and aluminium.

Both of these metals have a high residual value, and recycling them can achieve significant energy savings.

When aluminium is recycled, the process uses only 5% of the energy that would be required to make new material. The reprocessing of steel also saves 74% on energy compared with producing new metal from iron ore.

Of course, Roto hardware systems are designed to provide a long service life over many years of use. Nevertheless, because we are committed to doing as much as possible for sustainability and environmental protection, we take steps to try and ensure that our hardware gets recycled at the end of its life.

AluEco scheme
In the Netherlands we are members of the AluEco scheme. This initiative is run jointly by several organisations: VMRG, of which Roto is a partner, plus the Association of Aluminum System Suppliers, VAS (Alcoa, Reynaers, Hueck and SAPA), Schüco and Aluprof.
All of the businesses in the AluEco scheme have committed to make every effort to reclaim and recycle their products when buildings are demolished so that the metals can be reused.

The hardware on doors and windows may be a small fraction of the overall quantity of metal used in a building, but when so many different supplier companies all commit to schemes like AluEco, it can make a real difference. Such initiatives also help foster an industrial culture where reprocessing of materials is the norm.
Energy efficiency
As well as recycling, the AluEco community also promotes the use of modern façade technology for sustainable buildings in order to make them more energy efficient.
Roto systems contribute to energy efficiency in several ways.
The Roto Deventer range of weather seals uses cutting edge materials and designs to help maintain air tightness over the life of a window or door.
Our hardware systems are capable of supporting thicker frames and triple glazing or other specialist glass. These frames and glazed units improve thermal efficiency but also increase the weight of a movable sash. This is not a problem when you have Roto hinges and mechanisms.

Finally, our range of electromechanical systems with products such as E-Tec Drive can be used to make windows that react to influences such as temperature and humidity, and control ventilation in a way that minimises wasted energy.

The sustainability angle is just one of many reasons to work with Roto as your complete partner for window and door technology.
